Prosthetic

"Prosthetic" is a song by British progressive metal band Haken. It was the first single and the opening track from the band's sixth album, Virus. The songs lyrics follow the storyline from their previous album, Vector, and act as a bridge between it and Virus. The opening to the music video was initially teased on a livestream on Inside Out Music's YouTube channel on 3 April 2020 and was released the following day.

The single artwork was designed by Blacklake is directly based upon the album art from Vector.

Basis

NOTE: It's recommended that you know the basis of the album before you read this.

"Prosthetic" takes places soon after the events of "A Cell Divides", following another series of tests on the patient. The song follows the patient successfully breaking free from his containment and actively punishing the scientists at Mountview Institution for their actions.

Production

"Prosthetic" was the first song written for Virus with a set of demos created by Charlie Griffiths. The completed demo for the song was longer and contained sections that were later cut from the final song. The demos would later be shown on a livestream in April 2020, shortly after the release of the single.

The song's chorus was originally longer and contained different lyrics and vocal melody written by vocalist Ross Jennings. These eventually went unused on the album and were replaced by the current chorus. Jennings would later use his contribution as the basis for the chorus of the song "Young at Heart" from his 2021 album A Shadow of My Future Self.

The lyrics were written to have deliberate references to the previous album. According to Charlie Griffiths, the chorus lyrics have very little meaning and simply were what he thought that fit best for the song. However, Ross Jennings has said that he finds the chorus to allude to Brexit.

Sleep deprived
Annother chalk line marks the walls
Form restored, unbroken
Altered blood work awakening

Tame the storm electric
Prosthetic thoughts
They can't contain them
Why incite the trauma
Magnetic north of the borderline?

I don't wanna talk about it anymore
So sick of these questions, I've heard them before
I don't know what it is you want to hear
The more I stare the less becomes clear

Eye for an eye
Life for a life

Fight or flight, nil by mouth
Morphine fueled my apathy
I recall the Rorschach
But you forget the heart remembers

I don't wanna talk about it anymore
So sick of these questions, I've heard them before
I don't know what it is you want to hear
The more I stare the less becomes clear

I don't wanna talk about it anymore
So sick of these questions, I've heard them before
I don't know what it is you want to hear
The more I stare the less becomes clear

I don't wanna talk about it anymore
So sick of these questions, I've heard them all before
I don't know what it is you want to hear
The more I stare the less becomes clear

Eye for an eye
Life for a...

Quotes from the Band

"Prosthetic was the first song we completed during the Virus writing sessions and we always felt it would be the perfect opener for the album. It's a very guitar heavy track with its roots in 80s thrash riffing, but with the unconventional rhythmic twists and turns we often like to explore in Haken."

-Haken

"Well, my take... for me it was kind of the Brexit song. This was all happening when Brexit was happening for the last three years and the lyrics were like 'I don't wanna talk about this anymore' and it was just totally a reflection for me."

-Ross Jennings
