Haken on r/Place

NOTE: The contents of this page are purely related to the fan community. As such, sources may be a nebulous.

"Place", also known as "r/Place" by its URL, was a collaborative project and social experiment hosted on the social networking site Reddit that took place between 1 April 2017 to 3 April 2017, and between 1 April 2022 and 5 April 2022.

What was r/Place?

r/Place consisted of a large canvas (1000 x 1000 in 2017, 2000 x 2000 in 2022) where any Reddit user could place down a single pixel every 5 to 20 minutes. This meant that communities had to come together to create art on the canvas.

Haken had no presence on the 2017 canvas, nor was there any attempt to create any. As such, everything shown is from the 2022 canvas.

Early Attempts

The first plans for an r/Haken presence on Place were drawn up by Reddit user u/Chinese__T, consisting of the band's original logo adjacent to a 7 x 8 pixel drawing of the album artwork from Virus. This art would serve the basis for the first few attempts at Haken artwork.

The next few attempts were spearheaded by Reddit user u/SH_Eastawott (That's me!). The first was an attempt to squeeze the Virus artwork into the black section of a Belgian flag in the top left hand corner of the map, though this attempt were quickly snuffed out. A second attempt was made by Reddit users u/SH_Eastawott and u/PidgeonCivilisation, squeezing the Virus artwork nearby a coalition of American colleges. This artwork would last for just over a day.

Shortly after the creation of the first Virus artwork, an agreement was formed with the Reddit community for Spaceflight company SpaceX where the Haken logo could sit below their rocket artwork. From there, the third attempt was born.

Dream Theater Alliance and Haken Logo

During the construction of the Haken logo, the Reddit community for American progressive metal band Dream Theater were making their own attempts. After a failed first attempt, the Haken community offered to shelter the Dream Theater community nearby, offering mutual protection from vandals. As such, an alliance was forged between the Haken and Dream Theater communities.

The Haken - Dream Theater alliance allowed both communities to easily rebuild, with the Haken community expanding upon their original plans. During the construction of the Haken logo, the Virus artwork was changed to the album artwork for Affinity as Virus artwork already existed on the canvas. This was cut short as the original artwork was vandalised by a large amount of burner accounts.

After the loss of the Virus artwork, a plan was made to rebuild it next to the newly formed Haken logo. With the help of the Dream Theater community, the new Virus artwork was quickly rebuilt, along with complimentary artwork of Vector. In return, the Haken community helped construct artwork for the Dream Theater album Octavarium below.

The End

In the final hours of r/Place, a Russian live-streamer ordered the construction of a large pixel artwork that overlapped all of the Haken and Dream Theater art with the exception of the Vector artwork. In a panic, the Virus artwork was rebuilt above the Vector ink blot just before the closure of r/Place.

Despite a final blunder, the Haken community would be represented on the final canvas. As well as this, the nebulous ending of 2022's canvas compared to its original 2017's has led to the full extent of the two communities' artwork being shown as final.
